About MMG, IGCAR The Metallurgy and Materials Group (MMG) of Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, is a Premier Materials Research Group in India involved in multifaceted activities related to the science and technology of the materials used in power generation, particularly for fast breeder reactors, and associated reprocessing plants, particularly with respect to mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, physical properties and nondestructive evaluation of the materials. MMG is well known in the country for its excellence and sustained contributions in the area of materials science and technology. The testing facilities and the expertise available at MMG are in tune with the standards of international research institutions. The reputation for the high quality of research and development carried out here can be seen from the numerous solutions to practical problems, honours received in international and national fora and publications in reputed international journals. Many leading experts of this Group in their respective fields are well known in national and international fora, are guiding a galaxy of young and dynamic metallurgists, chemists, physicists, materials scientists, and engineers and technologists in various fields of metallurgy and materials science. The group has significantly contributed to the growth of the fast breeder reactor programme of our country by the way of development of special alloys and technologies related to fabrication including metal forming, welding etc, quality assurance of components by advanced NDT techniques, and characterising physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the materials. The expertise, technology and techniques developed in the group has been utilised in the national level for many important applications in defence, space, fertiliser, petrochemicals, chemicals and various other industrial sectors. A number of national and international awards and recognitions have been received by the members of the group. IGCAR was recognised in the year 1992 jointly by the ASM International, USA, and the Institute of Materials (London), UK for publishing substantial number of research papers in leading international journals in the area of metals technology during the year 1991. A number of failure analyses carried out in MMG were published in the ASM Hand Book of Case Histories of Failure Analysis by special invitation. Many of the scientists have received invitations from reputed institutions all over the world for participating in their research programme in addition to the awards received by many individuals from prestigious international foundations and institutions. Dr. Baldev Raj, Director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, is well known internationally for his contributions in materials characterization and technology, nondestructive testing and fast reactor technology. The test facilities, techniques and technologies available in the group are some of the best in the world, and most of the important properties of all materials could be investigated at one place. A multifaceted metallurgical research group comprising specialists in corrosion, mechanical property evaluation, materials technology, welding, non-destructive evaluation, quality assurance, failure analysis and materials selection is conducting pioneering research in their research areas for more than three decades. It is no wonder that the group is considered as one of the outstanding research groups in metallurgy and materials arena, both nationally and internationally. |
