Project was completed incorporating the 3D models of MV-SV with markings on the vessel, L & C seams, ISI openings, anti-convection barrier and thermocouple barriers on the MV and the ISI vehicle with all NDE modules in the MV-SV interspace.

The project is extended further for incorporating the airlock chamber, dissimilar & in situ welds inspection vehicle, ducting between the floor at 38000 mm and the ISI opening at roof slab level.

This project is aimed at realizing a table-top working model of an 8 DOF snake-like robot with servo controls which can be configured in a variety of combinations of pitch and roll motions for the joints.

Task space locations are identified and specified with few obstacles and modeling of the task space is in progress.

(a) Development of Ultrasonic Phased Array based Techniques for Rapid Evaluation of End Plug Welds in Fuel Pin Assembly

 

 

 

 

 

 

Modeling of the element size, number of elements in the array, coverage of inspection using a set of linear phased array elements arranged in the circumference has been made. A phased array system has been procured. Investigations indicated that use of guided waves is also feasible for this inspection.

(b) Transient Infrared Thermography based Detection of Blisters in Pressure tubes of PHWR.

 

 

 

 

 

The project aims at exploring thermal imaging technique to identify cold contact between pressure tube and calandria tube, and for inspection on non-irradiated pressure tube samples with blisters of different sizes. It also aims at developing a special Thermal Imaging System on linear array detector with fibre optics for scanning the internals of pressure tube

 

IRT system was procured and studies were carried out on reference specimens with blisters.

(c) Characterisation of Fatigue Cracks in Primary Heat Transport Components of PHWR and PFBR 

 

Phased Array and TOFD techniques for evaluation of fatigue crack in specimens and elbows, Tees etc

 

 

 

 

Modelling of propagation of sound waves in the critical curved regions has been carried out and validated with experimentations. Ultrasonic phased array and TOFD studies have been carried out for sizing the cracks during fatigue crack growth studies at SERC.
